What lipstick should I buy for my wedding?

Let's discuss some of the long-lasting bridal lipstick faves from our MUA kit!

bride applying lipstick

Working in the bridal industry as a makeup artist for some time, I have definitely picked up the best tips, tricks and recommendations for our brides.

We often find many brides will have their makeup done and love the cohesion of the final result. Isn't lipstick just the icing on the cake? It really brings the whole look together.

Despite this, stocking up on a similar lipstick to pop in their evening bag is often an afterthought. But if you're here right now, you're definitely one step ahead already!

There are 3 key factors to consider before making your wedding lipstick purchase. This includes your skin tone, blush, and durability of the product.

We'll cover this throughout the blog post, so keep this in mind.

Finding a flattering lipstick for you wedding

An important factor to consider when finding a flattering lipstick for your wedding, is your skin tone and, more importantly, your skin's undertone. One size definitely does not fit all in this department.

What are skin tones?

What are skin undertones?

Each skin tone, for example fair or deep, has an undertone to it. Undertones can be warm, cool, olive or neutral.

  • Warm undertones pull yellow

  • Cool undertones pull pink

  • Olive undertones pull green

  • Neutral undertones pull neither too pink or yellow

You can ask bridal makeup artist scheduled for your wedding about your undertone if you're unsure.

You'll want to purchase a lipstick that flatters your skin tone. Usually this means something neither too dark or light. You may feel naturally drawn to a flattering colour when you try it on, so don't worry too much about this.

Lots of colours look almost identical at the surface, but their undertone will make or break your wedding lipstick. You'll want to choose one that has the same undertone as your skin.

It can be easy to identify which is most flattering, as a lipstick with the same undertone will brighten your face and features. An unflattering lipstick with the wrong undertone may enhance any discolouration, make you look tired, or a little dull.

We recommend looking at lipstick in person so you can swatch them against your skin, and consult a counter professional for recommendations or advice on undertones.

Should my wedding lipstick match my blush?

If you wear blush in your day to day makeup, you'll often find you prefer a peachy-coral or pinker hues.

matching blush and lipstick

When wearing makeup it is important to the cohesion of the look that the lipstick you apply matches the hue of your blush.

My client (left) suited a neutral pink blush, which left a gentle flush to her face. To match this effect, the choice of lipstick followed suit here, and the makeup flows beautifully and enhances her features!

If you aren't sure which you will prefer, the best advice we can offer is 'trial and error' - try it out and see what you like!

Your undertone can actually come into play here too, but your makeup artist can make an informed decision if you don't have a particular preference.

How can I make my lipstick last for my wedding?

It can become an annoying chore to top up your lipstick on your wedding, when you really want to be in the moment and enjoy every minute!

So the durability of your lipstick really does matter when making your final choice.

A good rule of thumb is... if its glossy - it's not long lasting. You'll find there is a choice to make between comfortability and the finishing effect you want.

For example, if you really don't like the drying feel of a matte lipstick, you may wish to opt for a more satin finish. But, this will require more regular top-ups.

For our brides, we apply a long - lasting matte lipstick and apply a satin or glossy finish on top for the best of durability and comfortability. So this is a solution to keep in mind.

So, with the 3 key factors considered.. skin tone, blush, and durability, we have included some of our favourite lipsticks for your wedding makeup below.
